Beachfront
Developing a climate-forward real estate marketplace
Made with Megan Platt
As sea levels rise each year, they threaten to submerge US cities by 2100 and displace 680 million people. While some are aware of rising sea levels, those not currently feeling the effects struggle to understand how soon they will.
How do we get people to understand (and care) that their world may be unrecognizable in 30 years?
Deliver the data in a language that they speak via a platform that feels familiar, is intuitive, and taps into their dreams of owning property.
Introducing Beachfront
A real-estate marketplace that lists properties but replaces their value with the year they’re predicted to be “beachfront” due to sea-level rising, using real data from the NYC Department of Planning.
Users can search by city, toggle between years, and explore different property categories to see when these listings will become the beach home of their dreams.
Using data from the NYC Department of City Planning, we identified three different levels of threat which correspond to property types the user can choose from.
Properties in areas that will be fully submerged
Properties on a future floodplain
Properties that high-tides will reach
